Front Side Windows: 70% VLT Minimum

Rear Side Windows: No VLT Restriction
New York has no minimum VLT requirement for rear side windows (windows behind the driver). You can legally install any shade, including limo-black (5% VLT) on rear side windows of passenger vehicles. If your vehicle has rear side windows and you want privacy or maximum heat rejection, go as dark as you want.
Rear Windshield: No VLT Restriction (With Condition)
The rear windshield can be tinted to any shade, but if it is tinted, New York requires dual side mirrors to be present and functional. This condition is already met by most modern vehicles. Trucks, SUVs, and vans commonly have deeply tinted rear windows from the factory — this is fully legal.
Front Windshield: Only the Top Strip
New York only allows non-reflective tint on the front windshield above the manufacturer's AS-1 line (typically the top 6 inches). No tint — including clear UV films — is permitted below this line. Note: Some shops offer 'clear' windshield protection that's technically a UV-blocking coating, not a visible tint. Laws in this area are evolving — confirm with a certified installer.
Reflectivity Rules
